Freedom Fighters Fit Best in a Nazi Earth

copyright DC Comics, 1977,
I have been of a fan of the Freedom Fighters since I first saw them in the 1970's in the pages of  Justice League. (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Justice_League_of_America_Vol_1_107  http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Justice_League_of_America_Vol_1_108) .

I admit I did like the series that came after, but I secretly wanted to see world of WW2 that was presented in the pages of Justice League.

Freedom Fighters has been in 6 titles and guest starred in Batman: Brave and the Bold, but a sustained ongoing title hasn't taken.

Justice Society, however, has thrived because it found a new niche as Earth 2.  My thought is that straying away from the Nazi occupied Earth has taken away the originality of the team.  Even the recent PLASTIC MAN AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS failed to truly touch upon the coolness of what used to be Quality Comics.

I propose that DC do what it did with ALL STAR SQUADRON: create an Earth with version of Earth where versions of Fawcett, Quality, Charlton, Quality, and possibly Milestone heroes battle to save an occupied Earth.

Fawcett superheros, like the Quality heroes, have a better fit with a WW2 world. Spy Smasher, Minute Man, and Mr. Scarlet could be a great fit for an embattled world.

I would be cool to see Freedom Fighters in a new light.

The Joker's 1995 Series was ahead of its time.

The joke was on DC in 1975. A ground breaking Series was too short lived, but it had some very interesting issues.

The Joker basked in the limelight for 9 issues. He matched wits from The Scarecrow, and The Creeper to Sherlock Holmes.

I found it entertaining, but at that time villain books didn't last very long.

The series has been collected into a Graphic Novel called "The Joker, Clown Prince of Crime" http://www.dccomics.com/graphic-novels/the-joker-the-clown-prince-of-crime.

For more detailed info about the series, go to the following link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joker_(comic_book)

The series is a fun read for most DC fans, and more so for Joker Fans.

That is all for now.

All Star Squadron Remebered

Roy Thomas did great things for both DC and Marvel.  One of the best things he did was to created The All-Star Squadron.  It took all the the heroes who were published in the Golden age and put them on one team.

The result was a title that help to spin off other titles and create better versions some heroes.

Spiderman and other Characters created by Steve Ditko

Spider-Man is the most famous of Steve Ditko's Creations, but he also has had an impact on the DC Universe as well. Here are a list of the DC Heroes that Steve Ditko has created or co- created.

1. Blue Beetle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kord
2. Captain Atom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Atom
3. The Creeper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creeper_(comics)
4. The Question https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Question_(comics)
5. Hawk and Dove https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawk_and_Dove
6. Nightshade https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightshade_(comics)
7.Stalker https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalker_(comics)
8. Shade, the Changing Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shade,_the_Changing_Man
9. Odd Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd_Man_(comics)

Many of these characters had long runs at DC. Also not that many of them were a part of the DC acquisition of Charlton Comics.

And of course, Steve also created many villains and back ups characters as well.

Fawcett Heroes at DC

DC comics acquired Fawcett comic a long time ago.  Not one of  Fawcett's heroes has a mag of their own. Only The Original Captain Marvel, now called Shazam appears in Justice Leauge.

Atom Smasher History

The Flash TV show revealed the Atom Smasher for the first time ever on Live Tv.  Here is his info.
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Rothstein

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinity,_Inc.

Extreme Justice title before its time.

DC is a gritty multiverse.  You would think that a title called "Extreme Justice" would have been true to its name.

Not the case.

Check out the following link, and see for yourself:  http://www.comicvine.com/extreme-justice/4050-5505/

Personally, I think that Extreme Justice fits better in to the current trend for books.

I think that if the book had a different cast, it would have been more popular.

Here are my recommendations for the perfect EXTREME JUSTICE Team:

1. Captain Atom ( the more recent version) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Atom

2. A Red Lantern (either Guy Gardner,  Rankorr-Jack Moore, or Bleez )https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Lantern_Corps

3. Crimson Avenger ( the one Geoff Johns created for his run on JSA) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_Avenger

4. The Spectrehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectre_(comics)

5. Trantuala. http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Catalina_Flores_(New_Earth)

6. Lobohttp://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Lobo

7.  Nemesis. The Geoff Johns version of this character would be great. http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/File:Nemesis_Soseh_Mykros_0001.jpg

8. SPYDER: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Thomas_Ludlow_Dalt_(New_Earth)

Each of these Heroes has been extreme and would fit into the new team.

This team would also be able to handle some of DC's Nastiest villains.  I guarantee that in the right hands, this team would have great stories.

Just a thought.

More later.

Heroes introduced in the 60s and 70s could make good Teams.

60s and 70s Decade would make great teams.

DC owns tons of heroes from several companies. The 30's and 40's having created the most original heroes. As you can see from the following lists, DC started to revise older heroes from the Golden age after the 60's and 70's rather than create new heroes.

Here are my ideas for teams based on what decade they were introduced:

1960s Heroes Team

Elongated Man
Captain Atom
Zatanna
Metamorpho
Animal Man
Batgirl
The Creeper

1970s Heroes Team

Black Orchid , Adventure Comics #428, 1973
Rose and Thorn, Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane #105 1970
Black Lightning, Black Lightning #1  April 1977
Shade the Changing Man, Shade the Changing Man#1 1977
Mister Miracle, Mister Miracle #1 1971
Firestorm, Firestorm #1, 1978

After the 70's DC really didn't created too many new heroes. I will admit that there were heroes created, but non more memorable than the lists above.

1980s

Booster Gold

1990s

Static
Starman (Jack Knight)

2000s

Miss Martian

Remembering Dead DC Heroes

Memorial Day is to remember those soldiers who we lost.

Today I am remembering those DC Heroes whose death have stood for years.  Unlike Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Batman; many DC heroes had died and stayed dead.

Many are not so memorable to most but I miss them because I loved the characters.

Here is my top characters I miss who have died in the DC Universe but have yet to come back to it.

12. Atom\Atom Smasher In the pages of Earth 2: Worlds End.  I have always loved Al Pratt. He was a great contrast to Ray Palmer.  Sadly DC killed him off before they could develop him more.

11. Atomic Knight Final Crisis #4.  Armored with armor of the Knights of Old.  This high tech version had lots of potential. The slight resemblance to IRON MAN may have made DC balk at using him any more.

10.Vigilante (Adrian Chase) Vigilante 50.  I miss this Marv Wolfman version of Vigilante. He had layers to his personality.  The only great replacement would be his immediate successor Pat Trayce.  Sadly she has not been seen in a while as well.

9.  Thunder and Lightning (Gan and Tavis Williams) Salvation Run 7.  Another pair created by Marv Wolfman.  These too were never really used well after their introduction.  The twins were Vietnamese \ alien hybrids  had great powers and would have made cool Teen Titans, but DC chose otherwise.

8. Super-Chief  52 #24 2004 I never really like the name, but the concept was very cool.  The fact that calling any Native American Chief who was not is racist is probably why DC ditched him.  Renaming him something else would have made this hero more viable.

7. Tarantula (Catalina Flores) Secret Six vol. 3, #7 (March 2009).  A bad ass Hispanic would have been a great addition to DC heroes, but I think that the direction that put her in may have been a big whole writers could not have dug her out of.

6.  Nemesis JSA #58.  A Bad ass woman that just didn't fit well after the story she was in ended.

5.  Red Tornado (John Smith). Not dead but replaced by the new Earth 2 version who is Lois Lane.

4. Maxima SUPERMAN:  MAN OF STEEL 117.  This is another female heroine who just didn't get used very well.  Sadly rather than explore her potential, they killed her.

3.Dolphin Infinite Crisis #3 and erased from current continuity  Dolphin, before she was killed was Tempest's (The original Aqualad) wife.  He too hasn't been seen in a long time.

2. Elongated Man 52 #42. Along with his wife, Elongated man created a sense of fun with their quirky detective skills.

1. Air Wave Infinite Crisis #4.  He was one of the fun heroes from the 70s (a reboot of the original Air Wave).  Sadly both is his secret Identity and hero name may have been his demise.

This is my list.  There are many more to include the One-Shot POWER BOY, but sadly I don't have time to write volumes it would take.

That is all for now.

Comicbook Resources list 75 top Batman Stories

In Honor of Batman's 75th Anniversary Comic Book Resources has listed their list of 75 best Batman Stories.

I don' agree with many of them, but that is my opinion.  Besides I haven't read many of the Batman titles in some time.

And from the look of this list it doesn't include any of the Brave and the Bold stories.

I encourage you to look at the link and see if you favorite story is on it.

The list is on the link below.

Justice League of America in the 1970s: What Set It Apart From The Rest

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA was hands down my favorite comic book in the 1970s.

There only a few issues that I didn't love. Artists such as Dick Giordano, Rich Buckler,  and Dick Dilliin, and many others it visually pleasing.

Writers such as Len Wein, Denny O'Neil,  Elliot S. Maggin, and Gerry Conway also wrote great stories that made we want to come back for more.

The one thing that made many of the books fun was the fact that they were divided into segments of subgroups of the team in many of the issues.  And each of those segments featured each Hero's logo at the beginning of it.

It was a cool way to segment the stories, and it gave readers a way to identify which heroes that starred in them.

The only other book at the time that did that was BRAVE AND THE BOLD ( a team up book starring BATMAN and other Heroes).  Sadly that feature is gone.

The attached link gives you examples from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (JLA)  #112.  I also pick this issue because it feature's The JLA's android enemy AMAZO.  Granted he is no ULTRON, but both plagued their respective enemies throughout the teams's existences.

DISCLAIMER:  Justice League of America, and all heroes names withing the link are Owned by DC Comics, All rights reserved.

I says this because I do not know if the sight got permission from DC.

I am using the link to demonstrate what was being done back then.  I encourage all who want to read these issues to go to any of the sites that allow you to download copies of these stories.  A plus to that is that most of the stories are stand alones that you don't really need to read previous issues.  JLA 112 goes for 1.99 plus tax on COMIXOLOGY.

Without further adieu, here is that link I promised you.

Enjoy.

Zatanna VS Scarlet Witch

Ironically both Zatanna and Scarlet Witch are being highlighted in the months of April and May.

Zatanna in Convergence as a part of all female Justice League and Scarlet Witch as a part of the movie: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

Below is a spreadsheet that shows that both heroines have a lot in common with each other.

Both have a long history with their respective team.

Both have been members of other teams.

Both have a long connection to their teams and affiliates of their respective teams.

Both were introduced in the 1960s.

DIFFERENCES

  1. Their Fathers.
             a.  Zatanna's father had been around since the 1938, But most people who would not know John                       Zatara.

            b. Magneto, Scarlet Witch's father has been around since 1963, AND has been a major Villain in                     the Marvel Universe.

2.  Their Beginnings.

          a.  Zatanna, unless the influence of someone or something else, has always been a Heroine. She has                   also proved herself to be a leader in JL Dark.

         b.  Scarlet Witch was a villainess to start and has strayed to the dark side more than once.

Below is a little more detail on these two.

DC's Speedsters VS Marvel's

Avengers: Age of Ultron features Marvel's Main Speedster: Quicksilver. Quicksilver has been Marvel's equivalent to Barry Allen.

Here is a list of the major speedsters for both companies.  Each Hero has a link for more info.

Please note that both the companies that now make up DC (Quality and DC Comics) came out with speedsters a year before Golden age Marvel (Timely).

Also note that Barry Allen Flash pre dates Marvel's Quicksilver by 8 years.

Also note that public domain took the ability for DC to use the Quicksilver name which it had rights to since 1940 when Marvel Debuted Quicksilver in 1964.

Also note that Johnny Quick and Whizzer have evil versions on alternate realities of their respective universes.

Without further adieu, here is my list of the major speedsters in DC and Marvel.

A list DC Comics Evil robots

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" introduces moviegoers to Marvel's ultimate robot evil, and to The Vision.

Ultron first appeared in Avengers 54, July 1968.  The Vision first appeared in Avengers October of 1968.

As you will see from the following list, DC had many of its evil androids and robots long before Marvel.  You will note that Mister Atom was created in 1948.

One would also conclude that there are many similarities between Brainiac and Ultron.  This includes when DC made Brainiac more robotic in the 1980s. Both have threatened their Comic company's main teams, and both have been formidable threats to mankind.

Vision and Red Tornado too had similarities, but that is no longer the case.  DC has altered Red Tornado over the years to make him very different from Vision.  That was not the case when they were both introduced as Androids.  Please remember that both were using Golden Age Hero names, both of which were not Androids.

A small list of DC Evil Androids and Robots.
  1. Amazo, First Appearance: Brave and the Bold 30, June 1960
  2. Brainiac, First Appearance Action Comics 242. July 1958
  3. Brimstone, Legends, November 1986
  4. Brother Eye, First Appearance, OMAC, July-August 1975
  5. Chemo, Showcase 39. 1962
  6. The Construct, JLA 1977
  7. Cumputo, First Appearance, Action Comics 340, 1966
  8. Eradicator, Action Comics 1989
  9. Manhunters, Justice League of America 1977
  10. Mister Atom, First Appearance, Captain Marvel Adventures, 1948
  11. Pulsar Stargrave, LSH 1977
  12. Red Tornado, Justice League of America 64, 1968
  13. Shaggy Man, Justice League, Jla 1966
  14. Ultivac, Challengers of the Unknown
There are more than on this list but each of these have been in multiple stories in the DC Universe.

Brainiac and Brother Eye (who was not originally evil), both were main villains in "New 52: Future's End".  Both creating havoc for most of the last year.  Ironically both would be great villains for either of the Justice League movies.

That is all for now.

I am going to do this a little different than in the past.  I am going to tell you the Convergence Titles I will be buying, and then give you the links to see what is coming out.

I know I have a lot of teams, and very few Superman and Batman titles.  I usually buy the other titles.  Sometimes that means I see the titles I like get canceled, or just don't get the commitment the other titles do.

This group gives me a variety. It also gives me a greater view of the potential titles to fill the void of the ones  canceled.  I would like to see the Freedom Fighters title get a chance as well as the Legion one.

Another thing that would be nice is the Speed Force title.

Of course everyone has their own tastes.  That being said here are the links for the April Solicits:

Enjoy checking these out.  April and May look very interesting. Let us hope it works well for DC.
