DC March 2015 Solicits

March Solicits Showing their Inner Lion

DC the month before 40 new titles reek havoc for two months announces that 14 titles will end in March.

IGN posted their take on the cancellations in the following link:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/16/dc-to-end-14-comics-in-march-2015

Contrary to IGN's Article, DC did say that the 3 weeklies would end in March to Make way for their April to May Event which we now know to be CONVERGENCE.

THE BELOW LINKS ARE THE MARCH SOLICITS AND NEWSARAMA'S TAKE ON THEM:

http://www.newsarama.com/23007-dc-comics-full-march-2015-solicitations-including-batman.html

http://www.newsarama.com/23010-what-we-learned-from-dc-comics-march-2015-solictiations.html

The following is a recap for those who did not check out the link of what titles end in March

Titles DC previously said would end in March
Batman Eternal
Earth 2: World's End
The New 52: Futures End

Titles Ending In March Not Previously announced
Aquaman and the Others
Arkham Manor
Batwoman
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Infinity Man and the Forever People
Injustice: Gods Among Us - Year Three
Klarion
Red Lanterns
Secret Origins
Star-Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie
Swamp Thing
Trinity of Sin
World's Finest

My take on these, like most, is that they are all canceled because of low sales and because some of the Creators are leaving.  I also think that some of the CONVERGENCE TITLES MAY BE COMING TO THE LINE UP AS WELL ( see the forthcoming post for the titles and my comments.)

I also feel that all but INJUSTICE; GODS AMONG US losing Tom Taylor may have also been a factor in its cancellation.

I think the others just either lost or never found their audience.

Batwoman, in particular, kept jumping back and forth between different types of stories.  Horor one minute, almost scifi the next.  I think it needed to find a voice before it went off on tangents.

The Green Lantern titles lost their way when Johns left them.  The emotional spectrum needed that kind of energy that Johns provided, it just didn't have it.

Well there is the info and my comments about it.

Till the next Post.

Suicide Squad Movie gets a Cast

The Hollywood Reporter announced recently that the following are cast for the new SUICIDE SQUAD movie.

Some may not agree on the Joker in this one, but I think that it is a good idea given the fact that most of the Squad isn't that well know outside of Fanboys and Girls.

It gets the hook we need for it to make money, and so that they can make more SUICIDE SQUAD films

So here is the Cast:

Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
Suicide Squad will be written and directed by David Ayer (Fury).
PRODUCERS: Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, and Executive Produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns.
Please note that Geoff Johns and Zack Snyder are involved.  This makes it more likely that Comic Book readers will get a movie closer to what they know.

DC Comics 11-25-2014 News

Wonder Woman Movie gets a Female Director:  Michelle MacLaren.  She is not real well known, but if you look at her credentials you will see that she should be able to create a great movie.

DC Announces more CONVERGENCE titles
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=57327

COMMENTARY REGARDING THE EVENTS:

1.  WONDER WOMAN DIRECTOR:

Hollywood has been flirting with making a Wonder Woman for decades.  The main reason being they didn't want to blow it.  We need only go back to disasters such as the Supergirl movie and the Catwoman movie to see that Hollywood did not get it right.  One thing that Marvel has done is to set the bar high.  DC has to make great movies that stick to the scripts, and not goofy movies that have lame villains.

2. CONVERGENCE titles.

The more I see of them, the more I like the idea of them.  DC is pulling out great concepts along with many of the great creators.  At the same time they are throwing in the kitchen sink with the Multiverse coming into play.  I am very happy to see TITANS, and NEW TEEN TITANS.  THE JUSTICE LEAGUE and SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES are also sweet titles coming as well.  I have to say that they got me.  I want to see these titles even if it is just for two months.

That is all for now.

Constantine off to Great Start

The show has great special effects, a great supporting cast, great easter eggs

From the Beginning of the show things link to the DC Universe.  The girl damned to Hell comes from one of his stories.

The Easter eggs I can remember make it even more fun.  So if you haven't seen the show, please beware there are spoilers coming up.

Here are the spoilers I remember:

1.  Liv is the Daughter of Jasper Winters.  At first it means nothing other than he was a friend of John's.  But when you go into his house you see that he is clearly BARON WINTERS from the NIGHT FORCE book.

2.  Baron Winter's medallion looks a lot like the one used by Doctor Occult.

3.  Doctor Fate's helmet is in Winters home.

4.  Zed, from Constantine's book shows up as well.

These are the ones that come to me off the top of my head.

Needless to say, I am pleased with the pilot.

More to come.

DC Comics Movies announced

Warner Bros announced their upcoming DC Comics Movies.

Here is the schedule they announced:

2016:
March 25: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
August 5: Suicide Squad
2017:
June 23: Wonder Woman
November 17: Justice League
2018:
March 23: The Flash
July 27: Aquaman
2019:
April 5: Shazam
June 14: Justice League 2
2020:
April 3: Cyborg
June 19: Green Lantern

Now those who don't want to wait may already be watching the Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, and Constantine for a couple years before they come out.  Not to mention Supergirl, I Zombie, and Titans are in the wings.

Plus each of the shows has spin-off potential.  Please note that The Flash is came out of the Arrow series.  As an example:  The Atom (Ray Palmer) is eventually moving from Arrow to The Flash so anything could happen from there.  We will see what transpires.  I think as that as long as they keep producing great stories, the TV shows will create a great foundation for the movies that are coming out.

DC Shows Are Well And More are in the Wings

Flash, Arrow, and Gotham are Fall Season hits.

Flash and Arrow have both set record rating numbers for the CW this Season.  Another Show appears to be in the wings based on that success.

Let us not forget that Supergirl and Titans are both in development as well.  And I would like to point out that DC has said that everything on TV is in a shared Universe.

I envision that Supergirl, Titans, Arrow, and The Flash will cross over once all the shows establish themselves.

Lest we forget The Flash, Constantine, Gotham, and Arrow all have other DC Superheroes appearing in their shows.

Some are showing up in their before they become heroes (i.e.....Montoya, Allen, Palmer, and Corrigan).

Others sound like them may show up as heroes such as Firestorm.

We shall have to wait and see.

More as the TV Season Progresses.

New Gods and Crisis Connections come to light.

If you haven't read MULTIVERSITY, you should.

Grant Morrison is crafting a masterpiece once again.

Multiversity has linked itself to the end of FOREVER EVIL(FE) in that occurs in the NEW 52 Universes.

At the End of FE the Aniti-Monitor appears and talks about his coming battle with Darkseid.

At the end of GREEN LANTERN #34 High Father and the New Gods of New Genesis appear looking for the Anti-Death Equation.  The Anti-Death Equation is mentioned in MULTIVERSITY #1.

The upcoming GREEN LANTERN GODHEAD involves a battle between the Green Lantern family of titles and the New Genesis New Gods.

Anti Death sounds like it will be the issue they are concerned about.

So the next step seems to be a future conflict between The New Gods and the Aniti- Monitor over Anti-Death.

Darkseid usually being one to care more about Anti-Life, but it appears there is a battle for the new equation.

We will See.

DC November 2014 Solicits

DC is continuing to shake up the books in November.

They are adding yet another Batman book.

Creative teams are changing for many of the books.

They are continuing to bring in new and old into the New 52.

The Unknowns continue their way through BATWOMAN.  One new addition to that group seems to be THE DEMON.

The Legion of Super-Heroes are still visiting JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED.

New Gods are still invading the Green Lantern Family in the GREEN LANTERN: GODHEAD story.

Not to mention that All three of the Weeklies are up and running.  EARTH 2: WORLD'S END  looks to pretty good because it continues to connect to other parts of the New 52.

Well for more info on the solicits Please click on the following link:

Following Marvel's TV to Movie Connection would Limit DC's Audience

I totally disagree with this article's premise. Linking the DC Movies to the DC TV shows would be a bad idea.

Here are my reasons:

1. DC, unlike Marvel is on three different networks at the start of the 2014 to 2015 season: The CW, NBC and Fox. Marvel is on only one: ABC. Disney owns ABC and Marvel.

2. DC has 4 shows and Marvel has 2. The way the networks are set up today, streaming and binge watching are more prevalent.

3. Many people, like myself, wait for the Movies to come to video. Kind of hard to remember which movie connects to what show when you watch movies that way. Marvel is just asking viewers to go out and watch the movie. Sorry in my case it is asking too much.

4. Only 2 of the 4 shows would directly link to the Batman-Superman part of the Universe. Constantine deals with the occult, and Gotham is more of a Batman Origin Story.

5. The two other shows ( I, Zombie and Preacher) that premiere in 2015 are from the Vertigo line of DC comics. Both have no connection to the mainstream DC characters. Preacher airs on yet another network: AMC.

6. Marvel has 2 movies coming out every year. The next DC Movie (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) doesn't come out until 2016.

7. When the dust settles at the end of the 14-15 season this is what will exist:

Marvel will have 6 shows and a mini Series on 2 networks- ABC (owned by Disney) and Netflix with has a Distribution Deal with Disney.

DC will have 6 shows on 4 Different Networks. Only one of those having ties to DC's parent TimeWarner-The CW.

So in conclusion. Marvel can tie their TV and movies together because they have deals with the Networks who are airing them. And in reality DC is on more Free TV than Marvel. Only the Preacher series requires you have some kind of Pay TV.

DC has a bigger cross section of an audience. Not everyone who watches Fox or NBC will always watch the CW. Whereas Both of the free tv marvel has are on One Network.

It is pretty easy when you have only one network to deal with to connect to your movies.

Here is the Article I refer to:
http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/08/14/dc-movies-batman-superman-response/

New 52 Report Card so Far

I am sorry to inform you Mr and Mrs DC but I have to give your Child a Overall Grade of B

New 52 has tried to excel in the short time it has existed

The following are the good things I have found it New 52's work so far:

The Good

  • The Green Lantern Titles
  • The Earth 2 Titles
  • Forever Evil
  • The Justice League Titles
  • Batman titles
  • Aquaman and the fact he has a mini family of titles.
  • Group events (i.e. Green Lantern titles events like the upcoming Green Lantern: Godhead).
  • The Dark titles.
  • Some of The Edge titles

The Bad

  • Too much experimentation (i.e. National Comics and Threshold)
  • Too many gimmicks (i.e. 52 different covers of Justice League America #1).
  • Assigning groups to different types of groups and then almost letting one of them be canceled out of existence.
  • Continuity.  Just about everyone I talk to about the New 52 are finding that there are already holes in its continuity.
  • Radical changes to old continuity (i.e. Morrison putting the 31st Century WANDERERS in the 21st Century).
  • Radically revising new Old 52 heroes on the premise that it will bring new and old readers to the revision..and finding out it did not.
There are countless other ways that the New 52 has failed to reach its potential.  They are just too many to mention in this report card.

Areas of Potential Improvement

  • The Five year Jump in October.  This brings in new creative teams to give titles a different perspective.
  • The announced expansion of the Batman titles.
  • The still unannounced Event that kicks off in April.
  • Quicker course corrections as is evidenced by JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, TEEN TITANS, BATGIRL, AND THE NEW SUICIDE SQUAD.
  • The reintroduction of The Metal Men and The Doom Patrol in Justice League.
  • A new Group called the Unknowns is being introduced in Batwoman.

So as I said at the beginning of the Report Card, DC has earned a B.  There are many things it has done well, but I still think there is room for improvement.

Spider-Man will never be in a Justice League story: Reasons why

1.  The age of cross company cross overs is long gone.

2.  DC and Marvel are now both a part of big movie companies.

3.  DC and Marvel Movies are battling it out in movie theaters.

4. Disney (who owns Marvel) and TimeWarner (who owns DC) are trying to put their products out and not knowingly endorse another media company's product.

So even though Superman and Spider-Man have met, and even thought JLA and Avengers have met.

Spider-man will never even be consider for membership on the JLA.

Unless, of course, Disney buys DC.   Doubtful that will ever happen.

RUMOR THAT JUSTICE LEAGUE AND BATMAN V. SUPERMAN BEING SHOT TOGETHER

IF THIS IS TRUE, IT WOULD BE WHY THERE WAS NO BIG ANNOUNCEMENT FROM WARNER BROS.

IGN Reports that WARNER is currently shooting 2 movies not just one.

Given their reasoning, it makes perfect sense.

One film after the other would pump up people like me who want to see DC movies as much as Marvel movies.

Let's hope that the DC TV shows do well.  That would be more ammo for Warner to make more movies.

THE FOLLOWING ARE NEWS BITS AND VIDEOS FROM COMIC CON:

DC ALL ACCESS INTERVIEW NEW WONDER WOMAN TEAM

DC COMICS TV MEGA PANEL DISCUSSED THIS FALLS SHOWS

THE ARROW PANEL

BATMAN V. SUPERMAN INFO

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS:  There were rumors in June about DC announcing their schedule of movies for the next bunch of years.  That did not happen.  The focus was on the new TV shows.  I agree with that strategy because they have 4 new shows coming out.  I think it is better to build a base for the shows, and then work to build the movie Universe closer to 2016.

Besides we have a lot of teases out there.  The Rock is teasing Shazam related stuff.  So at least we know he will be in Shazam.

We still have other hints and stills to see with Batman V. Superman.  It, like the newest Avengers movie has a big cast of heroes.

So let us wait until fall.  Especially since ARROW has turned it up a notch.

Nubia: The Black Wonder Woman

BLACK WONDER WOMAN APPEARED 20 YEARS BEFORE BLACK CAPTAIN AMERICA

A Black Captain America is creating a lot of buzz these days.  It has lead many in the media to say that DC is lagging is diversity.

I say "What took Marvel so long?'

DC introduced a black Wonder Woman in 1973.  In Wonder Woman #204.  Her name was Nubia, and she was featured in 20 issues of the book.

Remember 1973 was not long after the Civil Rights Moment.  It was not as PC as it is now to introduce people of color into comics.  No I am not saying Marvel didn't introduce people of color. I am just saying, that people posting articles about DC is not Diverse enough just don't know the Company's history or the current books for that matter.

The following are two examples (which I talked about in two previous post) of what I am seeing lately:

"DC SHOULD MAKE WONDER WOMAN A MAN" - They did before and he fought her on one time, and was part of an alternative universe in another.  And Why would you want a diverse universe and add another white male any way?

"CAPTAIN AMERICA IS BLACK" - Didn't they do that before ( January 2003)?  And even when they did  that, Wonder Woman still was black 30 years before that.

I applaud Marvel for what they are doing, but I think the Media needs to do more research when they call either company on not being diverse.

DC News from SDCC and More

HEADLINES FROM OTHER SITES

Comic Book.com Interview with Jim Lee talks about Batman V. Superman

DEN OF THE GEEK talks to The Rock about his DC Role.

MY RESPONSE TO ARTICLE ABOVE:

DC has been making strides to become more diverse with the introduction of the new 52.  DC is making strides.  The following are titles which feature diversity.

EARTH 2:  A black SUPERMAN, an Arabic DR. FATE, a Gay Green Lantern, Hawkgirl seems to be a women of color, and many of the supporting characters are people of color.

JUSTICE LEAGUE:  CYBORG, Former Member: ELEMENT WOMAN, New Member: POWER RING.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED: Alana Strange is Black, Equinox is Native American.

BATWING....The Dude is Black

TEEN TITANS:  BUNKER is gay.

BATWOMAN: Lesbian

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS:  STARFIRE--yes an alien woman of color counts in my book.

FUTURE'S END: MISTER TERRIFIC, Half of Firestorm, Some Black dude wearing a flag for a cape.

I could go on and on as to where DC has made strides to become more diverse.  The only difference is that DC isn't replacing a major hero, they are expanding it.

And to be honest with you there are more Diverse Heroes that DC has yet to put into the New 52.

The only complaint I have with DC and Marvel is that their are so few Native American heroes.

But the good thing is that the ones who have survived are very memorable.

DC: Dawnstar and Black Condor.  Oh and of Course Super-Chief (someone I would give a better name).

So I think that people need to do their research when it comes to claiming DC is not diverse enough.  After all they don't seem to know that DC did do some issues with a Black Wonder Woman already... why is it taking Marvel so long to come up with a Black Captain American?
